Why Ingredient Lists Look Like a Chemistry Exam
Flip over almost any skincare product and you'll find a wall of unfamiliar words — some Latin, some abbreviated, some that read like industrial chemicals. That's not an accident: U.S. cosmetic labeling rules require ingredients to be listed by their INCI names, a standardized system that prioritizes scientific accuracy over consumer clarity.
The good news? You don't need to decode every word. A handful of ingredients appear across a huge share of products, and understanding what they do — and don't do — gives you a real foundation for smarter choices. AHA (Alpha Hydroxy Acid)

Oil-soluble acids, most notably salicylic acid, that penetrate into pores to dissolve excess sebum and dead cells. Often used for acne-prone or congested skin types.
Retinol
A vitamin A derivative available in over-the-counter skincare that encourages cell turnover. Among the most researched cosmetic actives; increases sun sensitivity during use.
Niacinamide

Hyaluronic Acid

Ceramides

Ascorbic Acid

Squalane

Occlusive
An ingredient class (e.g., petrolatum, dimethicone) that forms a physical film over the skin to slow moisture evaporation. Often used as the final layer in a routine.
Humectant
An ingredient that draws water toward itself, either from the environment or deeper skin layers. Glycerin and hyaluronic acid are common examples.
Tocopherol
The INCI name for vitamin E, a fat-soluble antioxidant frequently used in skincare to stabilize formulas and help protect the skin barrier.
The Active Ingredient Categories You'll See Most

Exfoliants
AHAs (alpha hydroxy acids — glycolic, lactic, mandelic) dissolve the bonds holding dead skin cells together, working on the surface. Humectants, Emollients, and Occlusives
These three moisture-management categories work differently. Humectants (hyaluronic acid, glycerin) draw water into the skin. Label Position and Concentration: What Order Tells You

Active ingredients that work at low concentrations — niacinamide at 2–5%, retinol at 0.025–1% — can appear further down the list and still be effective, so position alone doesn't tell the whole story.
