Smart thermostats are not universally compatible. The two most common residential setups are forced-air systems (which use a furnace and central air conditioner) and heat pump systems (which move heat rather than generate it). Heat pumps require thermostats that support auxiliary and emergency heat functions, which use different wiring terminals. Identifying your system type before shopping prevents a mismatch between the thermostat's capabilities and your equipment.

Installing a single-stage thermostat on a multi-stage system usually still works, but you'll lose access to efficiency benefits your equipment is capable of delivering.

Confirm your Wi-Fi band compatibility

Check the thermostat's specifications for supported Wi-Fi bands, and if needed, confirm your router allows separate 2.4 GHz access.
